Dr. Myers, Professor of Africana Studies at Howard University, will contextualize the origin of Black History Month (originally Negro History Week) to arm Mbongi participants of Dr. Carter G. Woodson's intent for the sacred month.

About the Juneteenth Mbongi Collective:

The Juneteenth Collective Mbongi is a space where Black people can gather to learn, research, and produce knowledge on the topics surrounding Juneteenth.

The word Mbongi is derived from the Bantu family of languages, of Congo-origin, meaning, "learning place." The Mbongi is intended to be a space where people can come together to work through and heal trauma, (re)learn our histories, and explore ideas posed by the collective and to report out to our communities and the world what we’ve uncovered.

Primarily, the Juneteenth Mbongi interrogates the current narrative surrounding the emancipation of enslaved Africans in the United States and repositions us as our own saviors and liberators through rigorous study, engaging discussions, and informed action.
